The holidays don’t have to be a time of excess, but if they are, the activities below can help with that. Whether you want to run off Christmas lunch, or just skip it altogether there is something going on in the U.K. in 2016 for you.
1. 54th Annual Matlock Boxing Day Raft Race
Started in the early 1960s to raise funds for the RNLI. The rafts are home-made vessels, some made for racing & others for comedy with crew in fancy dress.
2. Coral Welsh Grand National
Their biggest race of the year, the £150,000 Coral Welsh Grand National is among the most prestigious jump fixtures of the UK season & the richest race in Wales.
3. Grantchester Barrel Rolling
Teams compete (usually four to a team) to roll empty barrels as quick as possible. All without injuring spectators who risk life & limb to scream encouragement from behind a wall of straw bales.
4. Chessboxing Christmas Special
An exciting, entertaining & explosive event. Featuring established chessboxers along with new talent & some quality cabaret for good measure.
5. Christmas Ba Game
The Ba’ is played each Christmas & New Year’s Day in Kirkwall, Orkney. This is a traditional game of mass football played in the streets of the town between the Uppies & the Doonies.
6. Tenby Boxing Day Swim
Hundreds of nutty swimmers & thousands of spectators enjoy Tenby’s legendary Boxing Day Swim every year. Come & join the fun.
