The pentathlon was the pinnacle of the Ancient Greek games. Today the pentathlon is still a highlight, although it has evolved a great deal.
The ancient pentathlon was running, jumping, spear-throwing, discus and wrestling. The competition held a position of unique importance, with the winner proclaimed Victor Ludorum.
The modern version was introduced at the Stockholm Games in 1912, with competitions in pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding & running. These events were selected to test an athletes moral qualities as much as their physical resources & skills, producing a complete athlete.
From 1912 to 1980, the Olympic modern pentathlon was held over five days with one event each day. Currently all of the events are held in one day. Competitors score points in the first three events to decide their starting position for the final combined event. The final event is shooting & running & the first competitor over the line wins the gold.
In 2010 during the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, a laser pistol was used instead of the traditional pellet-firing air gun for the first time during an official international competition. Laser shooting was introduced for additional safety & to reduce the environmental impact of lead bullets. It saw its debut at an Olympic Games in London 2012.
