Swordplay has been in practice for thousands of years. Carvings depicting fencers were found near Luxor dating back to around 1190 BC. During the 16th to the 18th centuries, sword duels were common using a variety of sword types.
Originally used for military training, swordplay became a sport during the 14th or 15th centuries. Both Italy and Germany have claim to its origins, with German fencing masters organising the first guilds in the 15th century.
innovations during the 17th and 18th centuries led to increasing popularity of fencing as a sport. The foil was developed; a set of rules was written to governing the target area; and the wire-mesh mask as created.
Fencing made its Olympic debut at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained in the Games since. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, using three types of weapon: foil, epee and sabre.
