Diving became popular in Northern Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. It started with gymnasts performing tumbling routines into the water.
Late in the 19th century some Swedish divers visited Great Britain & put on a display of diving. They proved hugely popular & led to the formation of the Amateur Diving Association, in 1901.
Diving saw its Olympic debut at the 1904 Games in St Louis. The springboard and platform events have been included & women were included in competition 1912.
This discipline was originally dominated by the US, but it began to waiver with the participation of China in the late 1980s. While the American Greg Louganis was still in competition, the Chinese managed some victories. Since Louganis retired, China has dominated the men’s events.
Diving, along with swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo are governed by the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA).
