Bicycles were originally developed in the mid-18th century and have been a popular form of transportation since. In 1885 J.K. Starley devised the chain-and-gearing system, revolutionizing the vehicle.
Cycling is one of the few sports that has always featured at the Olympic games. The first road event at the Olympics took place in 1896 on the marathon route at the first Games of the modern era in Athens. However, Road cycling did not appear at all of the games during the early 20th century.
The sport has continued to change & expand over the past century & 1996 marked the debut of the individual time trial at the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
The Europeans have always dominated Olympic cycling, particularly the French and Italians. Eastern European countries have also won many Olympic medals, especially in track cycling.
