Mountain biking began as a fringe sport in California during the 1970’s. The key to the sport is the development of robust bikes which were able to handle rough terrain.
The first informal mountain bike competition was the Repack Downhill race, held regularly between 1976 and 1979 across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. The races attracted a variety of riders & the media soon took an interest.
By 1983 the sport was popular enough to support national championships in the US. Not long after the sport grew large enough for World Championships & to be recognised by the International Cycling Union by 1990.
Mountain biking made its Olympic debut at the Atlanta Games in 1996, with a cross-country event for men and women. The program has remained unchanged ever since.
