Spring is here & it’s time to get active! The events below are meant to get your blood pumping with adventure. So find one someplace you’d like to visit & get planning.
1. 12 Hours in the Wild West Mountain Bike Endurance Race
New Mexico’s season opener for endurance mountain biking. This year the event runs through the Village of Ruidoso & the Grindstone Lake Trail System. Taking advantage of the spectacular, purpose-built bike trails & a staging/camping area sheltered from dust & wind.
2. 7th Annual NC Gravity Games
Featuring a gravity-powered race & festival geared towards getting young people excited about science. Free for spectators.
3. Climb for Wilderness
The Climb for Wilderness goal is to increase awareness of wilderness, wildlife & waterways in Alberta. Providing learning opportunities & the challenge of climbing all 1188 stairs to raise funds for Alberta Wilderness Association. Known as the best Earth Day event in western Canada & attracts over 1000 individual participants & 150 volunteers every year.
4. Cool Hand Luke Gravel Grinder
Choose from two distances, 50 &’100 miles. There will be two SAGs for the 100 mile & one SAG for the 50-miler. Prizes for the top 3 in each of the 100-mile categories & a commemorative rock for anyone finishing in under 8 hours.
5. Etape Loch Ness
A cycle sportive around iconic Loch Ness. Featuring the chance to cycle 66 miles around the loch on roads free of traffic.
6. Targa Tasmania
A high-octane combination of closed-track tarmac racing & lovely natural surrounds make the Targa Tasmania a race for motoring devotees. For selected entrants there are over 2000 kilometres of world-class racing, over 40 stages.
7. Athens Orthopedic Clinic Twilight Criterium
Attracts cyclists from all over the nation & the world. The men’s pro-am criterium is an 80K race through downtown Athens, while the women’s pro-am criterium measures 40K. The course start-finish line is on Clayton Street at College Avenue.
8. Gensan Italian Showdown
Featuring two fields in a 75.000sqm village near the international airport of Milan MXP. The prize money of 10.000€ will be shared between the top 3 Rx/Master athletes. Sponsors’ gifts valued at 15.000€ will be given to finalists of lower categories.
9. 9th FAI World Paragliding Accuracy Championship
Since the first FAI World Paragliding Accuracy Championships in the UK in 2000, this rather new CIVL discipline has been increasing in popularity. Today some 1000 pilots from more than 20 countries are logged on the CIVL Paragliding Accuracy database and WPRS.
10. Mud Pig Day
Founded at Bluefield College in 1979 as a day off for students, prior to final exams, to celebrate another year of achievement. Featuring the mud pit, a water slide doused with water & oil, a rock wall, inflatable games, BBQ lunch, a mud obstacle course race, a corn-hole tournament & a lip sync competition.
11. 10 Under the Ben
A ten-hour mountain bike endurance race. Take on the challenge alone or work as a team to finish the most laps in the allotted time.
