Why is Skipping Meals not a Good Idea

Are you someone who works constantly? Maybe you work two jobs whilst taking college classes in the evening. Whatever the case may be, skipping meals is never a good idea. If you’re someone who is trying to lose weight and trying to get in shape, this article is also for you. Below, we’ve curated some reasons why skipping meals shouldn’t become a daily routine for the human body.

1. Takes away your energy

When you wake up in the morning (or in the afternoon, depending on your work schedule), you may be tempted to jump out of bed, get dressed and rush to your daily duties. Unfortunately, sugar is our fuel and skipping the most important meal of the day is never a good idea. If you skip breakfast and tend to feel tired all day, this may be your reason why. Sleep may not be the culprit after all, your food intake is. In return, you may also feel irritable because of the lack of steady nutrients your body isn’t receiving.

2. Decrease in nutrition

When you skip meals or cut back extremely on calories per day, you are reducing the amount of vitamins and minerals that are supposed to be absorbed by your body everyday. When you do this, your immune system decreases its ability to fight against sickness and you can become more prone to disease and infection. A lack of fat, protein and carbs can still harm your body immensely, even though you may be losing weight. Thinner doesn’t always equal healthier and it’s important to always get a nutrient filled meal before starting your day and after you come home.

3. An increase in weight

When you skip a meal your body goes into survival mode, when this happens your body craves more at your next meal which makes you eat more than you should. In return, your body stores more fat to be used at a later date and because of this process you can gain more weight. Even though you may not be eating totally unhealthy, this can still happen to your body. Getting your body into a normal routine of eating throughout the day is essential when maintaining a healthy dietary practice.

While we may feel okay for the time being, not getting the appropriate amounts of daily nutrients is never a good thing and should never be done continuously. Skipping one meal is fine but not when it’s everyday. Although when we do skip one meal, we think we’re okay the next time and that’s simply not the case. By using free apps like MyFitnessPal, you’re able to log daily what you’re eating and maintain your intake of carbs, protein, vitamins and other nutrients.
