Cold weather got you down? It’s time to find yourself an adventure for March. The activities below are both extreme & far flung, so get out of your comfort zone!
1. Mille Lacs Lake Kite Crossing
Competitors from 14 states come out to catch the lake’s winds, using kites as sails whole riding snowboards or skis. The main event is a long-distance, kite endurance race. An out & back covering 16–28 miles.
2. Macpac Motatapu Extreme Events
Every year for just one day the trails of Motatapu welcomes thousands of athletes to experience one of New Zealand’s favourite off-road sporting events. Events include: Ultra run teams | ultra run solo | xterra triathlon | miners trail | off-road marathon | mountain bike
The Chicago Urban Shopping Cart Race is an annual race through the Wicker Park & Ukrainian Village neighborhoods. Instead of sleds, they use shopping carts. Instead of dogs, they use teams of five people – four pullers & one musher.
4. 10th Annual Running of the Reindeer
Racers can choose from four different ‘herds’ in a dash down the streets of Anchorage trying to outrun reindeer.
5. Great Bear Chase Ski Marathon
Featuring 3 distances, 50k, 25k & 10k. With separate races/ starts for classic & freestyle. Also including a 50km skiathlon (25km classic & 25km freestyle).
6. New Zealand Rural Games
A fun family weekend of traditional sports & live entertainment.
7. The Spring Onion Sportive
The course includes 110k of undulating roads with beautiful views. A very testing course & a classic season opener.
8. Quiksilver & Roxy Pro Gold Coast
Watch the world’s best surfers as they battle in the 2017 Quiksilver Pro & Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast. Featuring a series of programs & great entertainment.
9. The 28 Below Fatbike Race
A 30-mile lolly-pop loop with about 2,700 feet of elevation. The course is on groomed snowmobile trails with great views at the top of Cement Ridge Fire Lookout.
10. KanDo Palmetto Swamp Fox Adventure Race
Participants travel across land, swamp & water seldom visited by man. The course covers 55-60 miles, with a finishing time between 10-12 hours.
11. Amageza Racing West Coast Baja
An event staged over varied terrain, normally over 2 or 3 days of racing. It proves the skill & endurance of riders, along with the reliability of their machines.
12. 13th Annual Pond Skimming Contest
Skiers & snowboarders try to stay dry as they ride down the mountain & skim across the skimming pond. Prizes awarded to best finishers, laughter & wet clothes guaranteed. This is a free event.
13. Oregon Whale Watching
People come from around the globe to learn about the gray whales that travel the Oregon coast every year. In spring watching starts late in March as the whales travel north to Alaska.
14. Bed Race
The Bed Race is open to anyone who wants to enjoy the excitement of old fashioned bed racing.
15. Arctic Circle Race
Cross country ski endurance race. The race runs through the countryside near Sisimiut on Greenland’s west coast, roughly 65 km north of the Arctic Circle. The race distance is 160 km.
