Running for 70 years the Rolex Sydney Hobart has become an icon of Australia’s summer sport. It ranks in public interest with national events like the Melbourne Cup, the Australian Open & the cricket tests between Australia & England. No other annual yachting event in the world attracts media coverage like the start on Sydney Harbour.
The 628 nautical mile course is often called the most gruelling long ocean race on the globe. The race starts in Sydney Harbour, then the fleet sails into the Tasman Sea, down the SE coast of Australia, across Bass Strait, then down the east coast of Tasmania. At Tasman Island, the fleet turns into Storm Bay for the final sail up the Derwent River to the historic city of Hobart.
