San Pedro de Atacama
Competitors assemble at San Pedro de Atacama in the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world. The race starts near the Tropic of Capricorn next to Lascar Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in Northern Chile.
The start altitude is 4,475 metres (14,682 feet), making the Volcano Marathon the higest desert marathon in the world. The thinner air will be felt by competitors, but the panoramic views of volcanoes will leave them even more breathless.
The first half of the race is on dirt roads, with an average of over 4,000 metres altitude. At 30km athletes ascend 2km off road. At 35km there is rough terrain for 5km along a gorge. The finish line is at an 3,603 metres (11,821 ft) where the temperature could be 25C+.
