17 April 14:00-16:00
An ancient custom with two parts. First a charity dole & second a mass “ballgame” played with small wooden casks called bottles. Beginning with a procession from the Fox Inn through the village, led by the Warrener, his attendants with baskets of bread & the eponymous Hare Pie. At the church gate, the pie is blessed & shared around the crowd. The procession returns to the centre of the village, then back to the Fox.
A break follows, then the festivities start up with another procession to Hare Pie Bank where the game will be played. The game is between the villagers of Hallaton & their neighbours from Medbourne & the goals are set a mile apart. Injuries are common as the scrum heaves over fields, fences & streams in its path. Play can continue until after dark & the game is decided by the best of three bottles.
