7 January 18:00-21:00
Old Mill Farm
Bolney, Sussex

Apple Howling is a modern revival of the ancient tradition of wassailing. Howling is the local variant of the custom. It is the ritual meant to encourage apple trees to produce a bumper crop. A torchlight procession makes its way to the orchard where the wassailers surround the oldest tree. Cake & cider are offered, then the tree is beaten with sticks & shots are fired into the branches to awaken it from winter slumbers. Wassailing songs are sung, morris dances performed & treats are consumed.
